"You mean the ones who are mean and scary?" Chrissy asks, giving him a tiny smile, a tentative inside joke. She doesn't know if he remembers both of them saying they'd thought that of each other, but she does. As difficult as it is to imagine anyone seeing her that way, she gets it, too. Something about popularity tends to go hand in hand with unapproachability, and the way a lot of other popular people act doesn't help with that. She thinks maybe she liked that about it. It provided protection, in a way, kept anyone from getting too close. It was lonely, though, too, knowing no one actually knew her or liked her for who she really is.
